Examples of Data Loss

Below are examples of data loss, over the past year. They all have one thing in common….

  • The NHS loses 21,000 records on an unencrypted laptop
  • Medicare lose thousands of medical records on an unencrypted backup tape
  • UK Government lose 3 million driving license records, on an unencrypted hard drive
  • HSBC lose an entire server, the data was not encrypted
  • The MoD lose 600,000 records, on an unencrypted laptop
  • MoJ lose 4 CDs containing lost criminal case information, the CDs were unencrypted.
  • HSBC lose 37,000 records, on an unencrypted media.
  • Virgin loses thousands of records on an unencrypted CD
  • Government lose MPs laptop, the laptop was unencrypted
  • Hartford Life lose thousands of records, on unencrypted backup tapes
  • JC Penny Lose thousands of records, on unencrypted backup tapes
  • Bank of New York Mellon Corp lose 4.5 million records, on unencrypted backup tapes
  • NHS lose millions of records, the data was lost on unencrypted media.
  • HMRC lose 25 million records, on unencrypted media

It appears the UK Government has not worked out what all of these incidents have in common. So how do you prevent data loss?
